Inspiration comes from the most unexpected places! One of my passions is to try out new restaurants. Besides the anticipation of dining somewhere new, I always look forward to a new idea or inspiration to incorporate into my designs.
On one of my endeavors, I was enjoying a casual lunch at the St. Francis restaurant in Phoenix, Arizona. I was immediately drawn to the industrial lighting and concrete painted floor. The stainless table tops created warmth with the modern chairs. Opposites attracted in this great décor through the use of texture. You can do the same in your home.
Yes, opposites do attract! I designed this living room, which is all about contrasting textures, for one of my clients. She wanted clean, modern lines but it had to be cozy. The sleek sofa was upholstered in soft velvet contrasted by the chair and pillows in a tight woven fabric. A wool area rug with a muted pattern added texture and a softness to the floor. A smooth, leather, oversized ottoman anchored the space and complimented the rustic accessories and lamps. The large oil painting added a splash of color to the wall and unified the entire room. Smooth and soft, yet rustic and refined, we accomplished our goal by contrasting textures.
The next time you’re dining out, look for inspiration for your home. Who knows, you may be inspired before the appetizer arrives!
