Olympic Memories -Gold Medal Design

All eyes are now on London for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. People from all over the world watch with anticipation as the world’s best athletes compete to bring home gold, silver and bronze for their country. The Olympics allow us to watch history in the making, providing memories for years to come.

Who can forget Arizona’s own Kerri Strug? Despite an injured ankle, she landed her final attempt on the vault, insuring the “Magnificent 7” and Team USA their first gold medal in Olympic history. In 2008, swimmer Michael Phelps brought home eight gold medals, placing him in the history books. Sports Illustrated named the “Miracle on Ice” the Top Sports Moment of the 20th Century when the United States hockey team defeated the Soviet Union and earned gold. All of us beamed with pride when they took the medal stand in 1980.

The Olympics allow us to escape from the day-to-day pressures of the world and give us “water cooler” talk for days and sometimes years, as we reminisce these award-winning moments.

Like the Olympics, our homes should reflect history as well. As a designer, I love going into a client’s home and finding out the history of an antique chest greeting me in the foyer. Perhaps there is a picture collage of family members artfully arranged on the staircase wall, or unique objects serving as accessories from a trip to a far-away land, strategically placed on the cocktail table. I love to hear the stories and see the unique treasures that allow me to get to know them a little bit better.

Family Photo Wall

Embrace history in your home. Hang the aged, silver-plated mirror that belonged to your grandmother so it reflects the contemporary dining table. Take vintage-looking photographs and place them in modern frames and proudly display them above your sofa. Fill the crystal vase your parents received as a wedding gift with fresh flowers from the supermarket.

In our fast-paced and high-tech world, embrace your history. Your friends and family will love to hear your story.

Like the Olympics, your home is all about creating memories.
