The Warmth of a Southwest Home

Southwestern style architecture can be impressive and stately; complete with large rooms, high ceilings and entryways to reflect the vast, wild landscape. Without the proper furnishings, your home may appear daunting and unwelcoming. It’s important to choose furniture that coincides with the size of your rooms and will develop a well-worn patina over time.

Here’s how:

1. Use large rugs. Rugs are an essential part of Southwestern décor. Look for rugs that have a pleasing pattern and colors like red, turquoise, and brown to call to mind the surrounding area. Avoid pastels by using natural colors of the desert, mountains, and flowers.

2. Show off accessories. Southwestern architecture is known for the abundant use of niches. Display treasured collected pieces of pottery or sculpture. Tie in a variety of textures for contrast and layering.

3. Adorn the walls. Native American, Spanish, and Mexican art is the perfect choice for wall décor. Keep your walls interesting and mix in different mediums, especially metalwork. Try grouping several small pieces together to fill a larger wall.
